Poolside patio ideas without the clutter

Garden planning

A useful poolside patio leaves room to relax, eat and move around. Start with the space you have and the way you use it, then choose a few pieces that earn their place.

Measure for people as well as furniture

Mark out the assembled size of a dining set or sofa before ordering. Pull chairs back on your sketch and allow space to walk past someone who is seated. Check that doors, gates and storage lids can open without moving the furniture.

Keep the route between the house, seating and pool clear. Leave access to pool equipment and any clearances required by its manufacturer. A smaller table that fits comfortably can be more useful than a larger set squeezed into the same corner.

Give each area a purpose

Choose the main use first: meals, quiet lounging or drinks with friends. Put a stable serving surface within easy reach of the seats, away from the pool edge. Add a dry place for phones and towels, and keep loose bags out of the walkway.

Notice where the sun falls when you are most likely to sit outside. If you add a parasol, check its space, compatible base and the manufacturer's instructions for securing and closing it. Shade should fit the layout as carefully as the furniture.

Plan for care and storage

Compare the care instructions for the exact materials and finish, including cushions. Ask what can remain outside, what needs a cover and what needs dry storage. Do not assume that an outdoor label means every part can stay exposed all year.

IKEA UK's care guide, for example, advises storing its outdoor cushions in a dry indoor place and letting them dry fully before closing a storage bag or box. Follow your own furniture manufacturer's instructions, and measure the storage space before buying.

Make room for the way you relax.

Use your measurements and delivery checklist when comparing outdoor furniture and hosting pieces.
